Can taking pictures in direct sunlight damage your camera’s ccd?
With a camera that doesn’t have a focal plane shutter, yes it is possible to damage your camera’s CCD. In fact, I did damage the CCD on my Nikon Coolpix 995 that way when I set up for a shot on a tripod with the sun in the frame. Thereafter, every frame had a small spot in the corner that had a magenta color cast. Others have damaged their CCDs when doing time lapse photography outdoors.
That said, your CCD will survive a few seconds without harm. I have taken such shots myself. When I damaged the CCD, I had my camera pointed at the sun for at least a minute.

CCD Cameras always produce the best pictures, they are good for surveilance work too “
